Reliance JioFi 2 MiFi portable hotspot is currently priced at Rs.2899. These devices come with a free Jio SIM card which have the 90 days’ preview offer. This offers will allow you to use unlimited data, Unlimited VoLTE calls and unlimited access to all Jio apps for 90 days from the date of purchase.
Jio is not yet commercially launched in India, but we can use the 4G Jio network using the 90 days’ preview offer. The company rolled out the ‘Jio Preview’ offer so that we can test the network even before its launch. But the hard is to get the offer, you need a LYF handset or a selected Samsung smartphone to get the free Jio SIM and preview offer. Jio was offering JioFi 2 MiFi portable hotspot device for HP laptop owners.
JioFi 2 is basically a wireless router, which is also referred as a MiFi device priced at Rs.2899. The JioFi 2 device is now available for everyone, even without a HP laptop. So rush to the nearest Reliance store and get one!
JioFi 2 design and build
The JioFi 2 is a small and compact design, which is slightly heavy and thick compared to other MiFi devices. The sides have a smooth curved finish and the body is made from polycarbonate plastic. The top surface has a plastic casing with glossy finish, Jio branding and a power button below it. The surface is easily prone to scratches, so be careful while using it. In a short time, my device already got some scratches. In the box, you get the JioFi 2, charger plug and microUSB data cable.
There are five LED notifications. Four of them are on the top to indicate network, Mobile Data, WiFi and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) status. There is a blinking LED indicator inside the power button. Right to that lies the LED battery indicator with three bars. On the left edge there is a WPS button to connect your smartphone, tablet or PC with the MiFi device without having to enter the password. The right edge has the microUSB port for charging the battery.
JioFi 2 has a 2300 mAh removable battery, removing the battery will reveal you the model number of the device, the IMEI, serial number, default SSID (Wi-Fi network name) and password among other details. There are two slots – one is for a Micro SD card (up to 32GB) and the other is for SIM card.
JioFi 2 Features
The JioFi 2 has more features than its competitors like Airtel and Idea. You can connect up to 31 devices using WiFi hotspot feature. Most MiFi devices ill only allow you to connect up to 10 devices at a time. Another feature is the ‘WiFI Disk’, where you can store content on the Micro SD card and share it with other users on the same network. Another feature is, you can make voice call with the help of this device. You will have to install the JioJoin app in your smartphone, and make free HD voice calls for 90 days via WiFi. The quality of the voice call in this method does not have good stability. Calls tend to get disconnected often, I don’t know if it is the network or the JioFi 2 making the problem.
WiFi only supports 802.11b/g/n standards, it has no supports for 5GHz WiFi AC. Other MiFi devices offer peak speeds of up to 21 Mbps, in a couple of tests, I was able to get around 27 Mbps. The company claims that the 2300 mAh battery will provide up to 8 continuous usages on full charge.
Using JioFi 2, you can also access all Jio apps like JioOnDemand to watch movies, JioPlay to watch live TV and other apps such as JioBeats, JioMags etc. I played “The Expendables 3” for 15 minutes to see how JioOnDemand works, and the movie played in high-quality and without any sort of buffering.
JioFi 2 settings and connection
The SSID (or Wi-Fi network name) and password is mentioned underneath the battery, where the SIM and Micro SD card slots are. However, if you want a customized Wi-Fi name and password of your choice, first connect to the Wi-Fi network using the provided password and on your web browser head over to ‘jiofi.local.html’.
Both, the default user ID and password is ‘administrator’ for accessing the configuration settings. It will open the interface as above, letting you change password, block users from accessing the network and more. Most MiFi devices have these features.
JioFi 2 performance
I did connect my desktop, laptop and two smartphones using the JioFi 2, so far it didn’t give any issues. In 4 hours the battery went from 100 percent to 60 percent. Which is not bad considering the number of devices I connected and the amount of data download. Downloaded Rise of the Tomb Raider from steam, which is about 20 GB, in 2 hours and 10 minutes. I am living in a rural area, Kerala, some times the speed tend to go below 500KBps, but most time the speed is in between 2.5 MBps – 3 MBps.
I was using a 256 KBps BSNL broadband connection. An upgrade to a 3 MBps connection is worth Rs.2899 for me. We are only paying for the JioFi 2 device and it comes with unlimited high-speed internet, HD voice calls and access to Jio suite of apps for 90 days. You can’t possibly go wrong with the JioFi 2.
