We did the unboxing of the Xiaomi Mi A1 smartphone. This is the first Android One smartphone from Xiaomi. Android One is a hardware and software standard created by Google to create low cost line of consumer electronics devices that run the Android operating system. Android One phones have the best version of Android, pure and simple.
Opening the box shows the Mi A1 smartphone itself, basically it is the Mi 5X smartphone, which is available in China. Accessories in box includes some documentations, a SIM ejector tool, a USB Type-C cable and a standard 5 volt 2 ampere charger. It is good to see a budget device with USB Type-C in it.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 has a metal unibody design and it is just 7.3 milli meters thick and it weighs around 165grams. Build quality is really good and it feels like a premium handset.
Xiaomi is using 2.5 Corning Gorilla glass protection for the 5.5inch full HD IPS LCD display. The display has a pixel density of 401 pixels per inch. There is auto brightness feature, outdoor visibility is also good. Above the display is the 5MP front camera earpiece and sensors. It has a notification LED, which can be very useful. Mi A1 comes with capacitive navigation buttons with backlite.
The 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C port and the speaker are on the bottom. Right side has the power button and volume rockers. On the top, the secondary noise cancellation mic and infrared blaster can be seen. Left side has the hybrid SIM tray slot, which can accommodate two SIM cards or one SIM and a One MicroSD card at the same time.
On the rear panel is the dual-rear camera setup, with dual tone dual LED flash. Fingerprint scanner is also placed on the rear panel, which works, but it is not exceptionally fast like in flagship smartphones. The Android One branding can be seen at the bottom.
This smartphone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded using a MicroSD card in the hybrid slot. It comes with a 3080 milli ampere battery. The processor has support for Quick Charge 3.0, but the charger provided doesn’t have … We did some tests with a quick charge supported charger and the results was not better, which means no fast charging support here.
Xiaomi also included a dedicated amp for better audio listening experience, we will test it with a good quality headphone in the full review. The Xiaomi Mi A1 smartphone runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box and it will receive Android O update by the end of the year. As it has stock android, features like split screen multitasking does work.
Most of the apps are stock, but Xiaomi does include their own app for remote control, camera and feedback. As this is an Android One device, it is confirmed that it will review Android P updates as well.
The dual-rear camera setup uses two 12 mega pixel sensors, with one featuring a wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture. The other is a telephoto lens capable of delivering 2x optical zoom with f/2.6 aperture. Front camera is 5MP with a real-time beatification mode. The background blur or bokeh effect works very well, even better than the Moto G5S Plus. Mi A1 doesn’t have any stabilization option, but Xiaomi can add it as an update.
It does not have NFC, so features like Android Pay wont work in this device.
The Mi A1 is available to purchase from Flipkart in India priced at 14,990 rupees. I will leave a link in the description section in case you are interested in purchasing it. We will upload the reviews of Moto G5S Plus and the Mi A1 soon, also expect a comparison and speedtest video. If you are confused between the Moto G5S Plus and Xiaomi Mi A1, I would recommend the Mi A1, unless you need a smartphone with front LED flash, water resistance and front fingerprint scanner. The Mi A1 will get Android updates faster than any other smartphones in the same budget.
