Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime is the best smartphone you can buy in India under Rs.10000 for now. Xiaomi is highlighting that the phone is manufactured in India, and it performs better than its competitors, but the main reason to buy this smartphone is its battery backup. Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime can easily last a full day with most users.
Redmi 3S Prime Build and Design
Xiaomi’s newest handset in India, the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime has a good design, just like any other products from them. Usually Xiaomi bring new designs to their every device, but this year Xiaomi seems to be sticking to a single design. The Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime looks almost similar to the Redmi Note 3. It is not the first time a company using the same design for most of their devices, Apple is an example. Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime looks like a smaller Redmi Note 3, that is not bad at all and that makes the phone one of the most ergonomic.
The Xiaomi Redmi 3S’s camera and flash lie at the top left of the phone, with the fingerprint sensor resting similarly to the Redmi Note 3. The placing of the fingerprint scanner is to perfectly place your index finger to fall on, without looking. The fingerprint sensor is fast, and makes negligible erros. There are metal trims on the front which makes the display seem pushed inside in comparison with Redmi Note 3.
Just like on Redmi Note 3, the speakers are the back, it tends to muffle the audio when we kept it on a bed or similar surfaces. The design of the Redmi 3s Prime relies on curves to nestle into your hand, and it feels like it belongs there. The design is actually very different from Redmi 1S and Redmi 2. The metallic finish on the back give the Redmi 3S Prime feel more premium. The device is lightweight too, weighing at 144 grams including the 4100 mAh battery. Xiaomi had to reduce the size of the PCB to include the large battery with it.
The power button and volume rocker are place on the right side on the phone. On the left side there is a hybrid SIM card slot that can house two SIM cards or a single SIM card and one Micro SD card. On the top there is a 3.5mm audio jack alongside an IR blaster. The Micro USB charging port is placed at the bottom.
At this price point the 720p display on this device can’t be criticized. Xiaomi Redmi 3S has a 5 inch display with a resolution of 1280×720 and a pixel density of about 296 ppi. This display has very good brightness, sharpness and viewing angles in this segment. The peak brightness with auto brightness turned off is 610 lux, which is considerably brighter than the Redmi Note 3, and pretty much the same as the LeEco Le 2. Redmi 3S has very vibrant colours, but it is biased towards the cooler side. If you like warmer colours, the MIUI has options to enable reading mode to make colours warmer. You can also use the Warm setting in the Colours & Contrast option. As usual the touch response of this display is top notch.
Xiaomi Redmi 3S runs on the 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC, with four cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and four cores clocked at 1.2 GHz with an average clock of 0.6 GHz. This is one of the first in its series to get the Adreno 505 GPU, which is faster than the older Adreno 405 GPU on SoCs like the Snapdragon 616. The Redmi 3S Prime has 3GB LPDDR3 and 32 GG ROM, with up to 128 GB support via a Micro SD card. Even if you keep more than 10 apps in the background, the performance will be smooth and will not give any lag. The performance of the Redmi 3S is so far the best in Rs.10000 segment in India. Games like Injustice: Gods Among Us and Asphalt 8 played well with slight frame skips, which are hardly noticeable. Big time gamers won’t buy this phone as they need more performance. While regular use Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime shows no lag and app load times are fast. This is enough for most basic users. For the price you pay, this is one of the best hardware out there. Playing games for 15 minutes reached 39.5 degree Celsius on the phone. While recording full HD videos for 10 minutes, the phone reached a temperature of 25.9 degree Celsius. The temperature never goes above 40 degrees, which is good.
The Redmi 3S Prime runs MIUI 7 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It is a colourful UI with lots of extra features on the stock Android. There are couple of bundled apps like Flipkart, Amazon, Facebook, Swiftkey and WPS office. It is possible to uninstall thse.
The best factor you should be buying this phone for is its amazing battery backup. The low resolution displays and larger battery makes this phone run longer than its competitors. The phone has a battery of 4100 mAh, which if slightly bigger than the Redmi Note 3. On the Geekbench 3 battery test, the phone lasts for over 16 hours, which is considerably more than the Redmi Note 3, and about double that of the LeEco Le 2. If you are a heavy user you use the device for a whole day, and if you are a basic user, the battery will last more than a day and a half.
Redmi 3S has a 13 MP PDAF rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture. Just like Redmi Note 3, images shot under bright conditions are good, but images show noise in poorly lit situations, indoor and night shots, thanks to higher than ideal ISO values. Redmi 3S’s camera is able to focus fast and there is major difference in colours when comparing with Redmi 2. The rear camera can shoot Full HD videos. Like most budget phones, the Redmi 3s isn’t very good for video shooting. The lack of stabilisation is accepted, but it is a bit too apparent, and the audio recording is not good either. The 5 MP front camera is just average for taking selfies with a f/2.2 aperture and 1080p video recording.
The dual sim 4G handset uses a hybrid sim slot (micro + nano / MicroSD), if you use a Micro SD card in it, you can only use single sim in the device. Dimensions are 139.3 x 69.6 x 8.5mm and weight is 144g. The phone supports 4G LTE, GPS + GLONASS, WiFi 802 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.1. Redmi 3S Prime is available in 3 colours, Gold, Dark Grey and Silver.
We can’t criticize much on Redmi 3S at this price point in 2016.At Rs.8999 Xiaomi wins over its competitors like Micromax Unite 4 and Coolpad Note 3. If your budget is below Rs.10000, don’t think twice, just go for it. You can’t find another smartphone in the market which offers similar or better features. Camera has issues, but at this price point you are getting a phone with 13 MP sensor, which cab shoot decent images in daylight. You are getting latest SoC, with a bright display and long battery life. If your budget is even lower, wait for the launch of Xiaomi Redmi3, with 2 GB Ram and 16GB ROM for Rs.6999.
